A truly spectacular night.
This stage adaptation of the classic late ‘70’s film is very much the rock opera, by relying solely on music and being free of any spoken dialogue. It would be difficult to talk about Quadrophenia the stage production without referencing the film, but it’s best to separate them at this stage by accepting that in terms of the story, the two are entirely different. That said, Quadrophenia’s main themes are very much intact: mod culture in the 60’s and the split personality of a young man. The ‘Quad’ in the title is taken at face value here, and so unlike in the movie, the lead role is played by four different actors and the superb interpretations of the songs keep you engaged throughout. The choreography was also exceptional and Costume Designer Carl Perry has also come up with a classic and stylish mod wardrobe. The show came to a dramatic end with a powerful and emotional rendition of ‘Love Reign O’er Me’. This came complete with Townshend style windmill guitar action by the two guitarists which was met with loud cheers of approval from the audience. A truly spectacular night.
